About Paul

Paul helps churches and nonprofits clarify their mission, cast a compelling vision, and inspire generous support so they can make the world a kinder, better place. He serves congregations and ministries of all sizes, walking alongside leaders who feel called to more but are unsure how to get there.

Paul has served as an ELCA pastor in settings as varied as a small rural congregation in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and a large suburban church outside Detroit. His preaching and leadership are shaped by a conviction that God meets people in real life, that honest diagnosis precedes genuine hope, and that resurrection—not scarcity—is the foundation of Christian ministry. Those same convictions now shape his consulting work.

In annual funds, capital campaigns, and strategic storytelling, Paul helps organizations name their “why”: Why do you do what you do, and why does it matter now? He listens first, learns each community’s story, and then crafts a narrative that others want to be part of, giving leaders tools they can use long after the consulting engagement ends.

Paul is the coauthor of Clear, Calm, and Connected: Reflections on Church Leadership (Fortress Press) and the author of Love and Faithfulness: A Marriage Planning Handbook (Augsburg Fortress). His writing weaves together theology, lived experience, and practical wisdom for leaders and congregations.

He has worked with dozens of congregations and nonprofits from coast to coast, helping them see a path forward when the future feels overwhelming.

Paul serves on the Trinity Lutheran Seminary Advisory Board, helping the Seminary Dean craft a vision for training pastors for the next decade. He is married to Brandy, a Lactation Consultant in private practice and together they have three sons, all young adults funding their way in the world. Paul is an avid cyclist, a Knight of Sufferlandria, and a two-time Moth Story Slam Winner.
